Sooner or later you’ve got to take a look at your network marketing business and analyze why it’s not growing.

One of the biggest causes of lack of growth in any network marketing business is lack of action. Makes sense, if you do nothing then nothing will happen. But the truth is, many network marketers don’t take action not because they don’t want to; it’s simply a case of getting stuck in that transition period between learning and doing and believe me, it’s real.

Let me explain. Someone starts a network marketing business and is given a ton of information prior to and at sign up. Now there are two possible scenarios here:

1. They take a look at the information and suddenly get that feeling of urgency and realize they have a business and need to get cracking - that is, if they don’t take action then no one else will. These are the type of people who everyone wants in a downline.

2. The other possibility is someone starts a network marketing business and starts to go through the information. When they’ve finished it they look for more and ask their upline for more and so the paralysis analysis cycle begins.

The truth is, the majority adopt the second scenario and part of the blame can be laid fair and square at the feet of their upline but in the end, a person has to see the big picture and realize the importance of setting up their own financial independence.

An alert sponsor or upline will know this and have in place a system which includes both action oriented education as well as theory.

But most don’t and the disturbing part is that just because someone in their downline is devouring information by the bucket load, this is seen as someone actually doing something. Believe me it’s not because while learning is important, doing is crucial.

It’s the old theory of cause and effect; whatever you do today to build your business will resonate into something positive sometime down the track. Do plenty of small things on a daily basis and suddenly you are setting the wheels in motion for something akin to a flood later on.

Once you understand the basics of network marketing you are good to go. Continuous learning is just an excuse used by many to say they are not ready and the truth is, they never will be.

A common syndrome affecting many network marketers is success stage fright. It’s true, just when someone is about to make a breakthrough for some inexplicable reason they sabotage their own success.

Now this could be because of a variety of reasons including personal conflict to simply wanting to avoid the spotlight but whatever it is, without a success mindset, then the chances you’ll make the same mistake are pretty good.

How do I know? Well, I’ve been there done that. A network marketing business requires both patience and determination - that’s a given. But it also requires a good deal of success mindset and just when I was about to make a huge breakthrough several years ago I got cold feet and sabotaged my own success.

Weird isn’t it. You work so hard and dream so big about releasing the shackles and living a life without any financial worries and when it’s staring you in the face you drive a sword through it’s heart.

In a nutshell, I had started a network marketing business and without fear or favor, worked like a Trojan to build it and establish a much needed source of income. In fact, within nine months of starting, I had grown my business to a level most only dream about.

In nine short months, I grew a strong downline and my income had reached an impressive $900 a week. Now this wasn’t yet residual (I wish it was) because there was still a lot of work to do. I was well on my way to hitting the first major level and achievement within my company which meant a residual income of $1700 would have flowed into my bank account every week.

Was I pumped. You bet but I was also frightened. It suddenly dawned on me that people wanted more of my time, I had to take part in more and more meeting presentations and it seemed as if any private time I had was gone.

I thought well, now I’ve got to this level my downline can do the rest and get me to the level I wanted. Big mistake. When I started to ease out of my responsibilities it filtered through my downline like a disease.

They started to mimic what I did. I didn’t turn up at presentations and neither did they. I stopped holding personal one-on-one trainings and so did they. I relaxed my lead generation and so did they.

You see, when I did something they saw it as okay. Instead of pushing home my advantage I let go of the reins. It didn’t occur to me the job was only half done. The result? People started dropping out, my income diminished over time and I was back to square one.

Back then, I blamed everyone else but myself. It wasn’t until I analyzed what went wrong that I realized it was my fault. Essentially, my mind was not conditioned for success. Yes, I had the skill and determination in the beginning but that something extra was missing.

The casualty was my network marketing business. It disappeared. They say you learn from your failures and this was a costly mistake. But I learnt!

Part of maintaining a strong success mindset is to create short term goals and most importantly, a long term target. I failed to do the latter and when I’d reached my first goal I sub-consciously relaxed.

Don’t make the same mistake. Remember, short term goals are just a stepping stone. Without an end target, you’ve got nothing to aim for. Aim straight and aim long!

Got to thinking recently about the 80/20 rule and how it applies to network marketing. Came to the conclusion that 80/20 is alive and well within MLM.

Take a look at your business and if you’ve got any sort of a downline, that is, at least 15-20 people in it, do a quick analysis and figure out where most of the activity is. You’ll be surprised in most instances.

Fact is, some will most won’t. That’s the nature of network marketing. There are people you will recruit who are driven to build a business. There are those who love the products and like the idea of getting them cheaper via an autoship. Then there are those who simply don’t have the motivation and desire right now to build a business and will either lay dormant or dropout within three months of joining.

These are the people that realistically, should never have joined in the first place. This is why it’s so important to target your leads and why the old school methods of network marketing are so off track.

The dreaded three foot rule which means everyone who’s within three feet of you is a prospect. That’s rubbish. This is one of the reasons there is such a huge attrition rate existing within the industry.

The problem lies in the fact these people are not targeted prospects. If you have to go chasing down and harassing people to take a look at a business opportunity then you’re missing the mark. You’re not getting it.

These are the prospects who make up a large proportion of the “80″ statistic within the industry. They weren’t looking in the first place; had to be coerced into taking a look at your offer and then you spend weeks even months following up with them to see if they’re ready to join.

Targeted prospects will seek you out. Why? Because they’re ready. They’re looking for a home business opportunity. They want to improve their current lot in life and they are going to be receptive to the possibilities.

And when you place your marketing and promotion in front of these people then that’s when the magic begins to happen.

Be warned though, it’s not a given that they’ll just join your business - there is still a lot of work to do but at least you’ve got something to work with. And if you do, these people will eventually become your members of your “20″ group.
